WHAT IS SOAPSTONE?

Soapstone is a metamorphic rock that is rich in magnesium and Iron. It is produced from pre-existing rock that has been subjected to heat (greater than 150 degrees Celsius) and extreme pressure, which cause profound physical and chemical change. The stone often exhibits various colors naturally. This is the result of minerals being trapped in the stone during its formation. Soapstone is produced in areas where tectonic plates are heated under pressure without melting. The stone is relatively soft and may feel soapy when touched, hence its name. Soapstone is often used for sculpture, kitchen countertop and sinks. Inuit in North America use this stone for traditional carvings. The Kisii people of Kenya and others in central Africa use this stone to make beautiful carvings from the natural soapstone or by adding colorful dyes.

CARING FOR SOAPSTONE ART PIECES

Kisii /Serpentine Soapstone art work should be handled with care. The art piece will break if dropped on a hard surface. To repair a chip, fine sandpaper may be used to buff out the chip. Apply a small amount of wood floor wax to achieve a smooth finish. Elmer glue may be used to glue broken pieces together.

Periodically, wood wax should be used to polish the art piece. This helps to maintain a shiny finish and also the color of a dyed piece. The plates and bowls are for decorative purposes only. The flower vases should only be used with dry flowers, as the stone is porous. Therefore, prolonged exposure to water may damage the stone. All pieces are individually carved. Therefore, no two pieces are alike.
